Sterling silver jewelry can often be cleaned using salt or baking soda, aluminum foil, and water. For a small amount of jewelry, you need only a small container like a glass jar, a little aluminum foil and some salt. Putting the foil in the jar, then adding a little salt and water will create a solution that will pull tarnish off silver. Drop your jewelry into the water and leave it for a few minutes. Then remove it, counting carefully to be sure you have not lost any pieces. Rinse your jewelry with water to get any remaining tarnish or salt off (especially for earrings), and it should be restored to a shiny, like new appearance.
For more tarnish, or more stubborn tarnish, use baking soda instead of salt. It will create a stronger mixture that works in the same way, the soda and aluminum drawing the tarnish off the jewelry. You can use a pie plate instead of a jar, depending on what you have available and how much jewelry you want to clean. If soaking in this mixture still does not remove the tarnish, a more concentrated solution is needed. Mix baking soda with a little bit of water to make a paste, then use an old toothbrush to scrub the item with this paste. It will be a little more work, but should get stubborn tarnish off your pieces.
